WHY
It Works!
Inspiring Literacy Series is a comprehensive reading series designed to
empower teachers to understand and master the content and instructional
practices necessary to empower elementary students to become confident
readers, writers, spellers, and communicators. A strong literacy foundation
is essential for a student’s academic success. Inspiring Literacy Series is
built upon a balanced literacy approach and gives participants an
instructional framework based upon the latest brain research regarding how
the brain learns and acquires language.
HOW
It Works!
Inspiring Literacy Series is composed of six comprehensive courses based on
research by leading literacy specialists, brain research specialist, the
National Reading Panel, and the National Institute for Literacy. The series
is designed for Kindergarten through Sixth Grade classroom teachers,
learning specialists, special education teachers (of mild-moderate learning
differences), tutors and parents. The course objective is to teach
participants how to equip students with a strong literacy foundation through
providing necessary knowledge, strategies, instructional framework, and
assessment tools to teach students to decode, comprehend, read fluently,
write, spell, and think critically.
- Six Comprehensive Courses -
Phonics
Foundation
Phonics Foundation is designed to teach letter
patterns, phonics rules, simple syllabication patterns, and instructional
strategies for teaching phonics. Focus on Phonics will provide participants
with the knowledge and strategies to effectively teach phonemic awareness
intertwined with phonics, sound-symbol relationship, the rules that govern
our language and the explicit, systematic way to instruct
.
Voracious
Vocabulary
Voracious Vocabulary is designed to help teachers
develop an appropriate plan for expanding student vocabulary. All aspects of
vocabulary in the elementary world are discussed including sight words,
academic vocabulary, content-specific vocabulary, and conversational
vocabulary. Participants will learn to utilize instructional strategies
grounded in brain research that make words stick so that students utilize
new words when speaking, comprehending, and writing. Words enable students
to comprehend as well as become effective communicators and critical
thinkers.
Constructing
Comprehension!
Constructing Comprehension addresses the research
that comprehension must be explicitly taught. Teachers will learn to utilize
metacognition and visual tools as strategies to explicitly teach the
thinking processes involved in comprehension of fiction and non-fiction
text. Teachers will also learn to utilize rubrics to differentiate higher
level thinking skills within each comprehension strategy. Instruction will
also include opportunities to practice instructional strategies such as
effective read alouds, small group instruction, and individual student
conferencing. The role of informal versus formal assessment will also be
discussed.
Fantastic
Fluency!
Fantastic Fluency provides participants with
engaging and meaningful strategies for increasing reading fluency. We will
discuss the purpose of fluency, reasons why some students struggle to read
fluently, as well as ways to support struggling readersy.
Reading
– Writing Connection
Reading – Writing Connection discusses how reading and writing thought
processes have a symbiotic relationship in the brain. If we design our
instruction in accordance with this research, we will notice our students
acquiring language through a more purposeful and meaningful lens. The result
will be more confident communicators; students who are able to problem solve
on their own, transfer knowledge, share their thinking, and see value in
making meaning of print.
Designing
Instruction
Designing Instruction provides a framework
for aligning instruction with how the brain learns. Participants will learn
the core processes of learning and how to utilize brain research when
planning whole group instruction, small group instruction, as well as the
role of creating student goals. We will discuss planning on the macro level
regarding units of study as well as on the micro level of daily lesson
plans. Teachers will have an opportunity to think about how to purposefully
layer all of the balanced literacy pieces in a way that leads to student
understanding, transfer, and retention.
